The other day I heard this commentary coming from around the corner:
"No William! Daddy doesn't want you to stand on that."
"Get down William!" (thumping sounds ensue)
"Oh! Good Boy William! You listened!" (in a very sweet, high voice)
Then pounding footsteps preceded Margaret into the room as she ran excitedly to report to me:
"Mommy! William listened to me! He's such a good boy."
The instinct to mother comes early.
