Maggie Moo helpfully wandered over looking for hand outs and added a nice aesthetic for Cowboy Clyde's photo shoot. Though he wasn't such a big fan of her sudden loud bawling behind him....
Being a cowboy isn't always as easy as it looks.
This boy is our heart & joy (our hearts are very full) and we love him so much.
Best cuddler ever, he knows how to make his mama melt.
His signature move, however, is to warm me up with several minutes of cozy cuddling before wildly bouncing up and down with no warning, giggle hysterically and pound me on the head with both hands. The cuddles make up for it.
He has the most robust, infectious belly laugh I've ever heard. On a recent trip to D.C. he would randomly burst into loud chuckling on the airplane, and there would be a ripple of responding laughter in the seats around us. His sense of humor is tremendous.
He heartily approved of the traditional chocolate cake for first birthdays, showing an excellent thoroughness in smearing batter over his entire body.
Later on, after it baked, he smeared it all over his body again with an additional nice mixture of vanilla ice cream.
Not withstanding cake and ice cream, however, he has turned out to be one of our pickiest eaters. It's important to maintain that lean mean machine figure. Each new food has to be thoroughly inspected for texture and taste (carefully placed on the tip of the tongue and then spit out, often repeated several times before it finally, occasionally, actually gets eaten). His taste doesn't always seem to follow the stereotypical toddler sweet tooth either, I have seen him spit out cookies in disgust and happily chomp on a raw onion.
The only time he pops things in his mouth without discernment is when he is scavenging on the floor. Then I have to be on my toes to keep things out of his mouth. Perhaps it's competition with the dogs?? At times I have been tempted to smear his dinner around the floor and I think he would eat more.
Current favorite activity is pushing around the toy chopping cart, looking very pleased with himself, and throwing plastic food on the ground. He is extremely close to walking and even took his first couple steps two days before his birthday. Also one of our most physical children, he has shown early signs of being a world famous rock climber.
Other favorite activities include tagging along with the corgi puppy, Rascal, and seeing what mischief they can help each other get into. Climbing into the dishwasher to try to lick/grab dishes is at the top of the list, followed by checking for dropped food under the table and pulling all reachable toys and books off of shelves to tear/chew on. They keep each other entertained and keep me busy!
While living in Portland I had a kind gentleman approach me, as I loaded Margaret (our only child back then) and corgi puppy into the car, just to inform me that I was so lucky to be surrounded with such cuteness. Now, years later, with six cute children and three cute doggies (or twelve cute doggies if you counted earlier this summer when we had puppies) -- I wonder what we would say? The cuteness overload has been multiplied a thousand fold.
Here is Clyde's big brother on his one year birthday -- some things never change:
Another (purposeful) similarity between both of their first birthdays is the wooden train present
(...and the shirt...):
Clyde 2017 Will 2010
We love these trains and they're a big hit with the kids too!
Clyde is one blessed little boy surrounded by doting siblings who love him and play with him, no shortage of animals to torture pat (and throw food to), and plenty of dirt around the farm to play in. But even more are we infinitely blessed to have him in our lives. With his cheerful, funny attitude, his boisterous physical antics that keep us all laughing, and his delight in the world and people around him.
