9/01/2016
3
This summer, as an excuse to sit in the air conditioning, I got it in my head that I would like to have a comprehensive reading list to refer to for our kids.

We have plenty of great beginner reading books that we have collected through the years, but as Margaret ventures further into more advanced books -- and devours them at an astonishing rate -- I needed to bulk up the list of titles I could pass on to her. So I poured over various reading lists, and racked my brain to try to remember my own favorites from childhood, and came up with this list.

A big percentage of the books came from Exodus Bookstore -- an excellent resource to check out, if you haven't already. It just so happens that a lot of their favorite books are the same as mine (they have good taste), and we have had fun completing their summer book reading challenge the past couple years. (Plus they're just great people, which we can attest to from personal experience.)

This list is very much a work in progress, and I look forward to updating it as the years go by and we add and remove titles. Many of the books on the list were based on others' recommendations and we haven't actually read them (or it has been years since we read them), so I expect we will make alterations as we discover the ones that were really favorites for our family. And as we find new fun titles to explore.

If you have some favorites that aren't on this list *please* feel free to share! We are always on the lookout for more good books and love getting recommendations. Our favorites (so far) are marked with an asterisk *. And you can also view the list on Google Drive, if you'd rather.

  1. So many great ideas here so I had to pin it! I'll have to get some of these out of the library for myself too! As I scrolled through it took me back to my childhood favourites and I was excited to see you had a lot of them listed, like Marguerite Henry's, Little House on the Prairie, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, Jane Austen's, etc! I may have just missed them, but if you don't have them listed I'd recommend The Jesus Storybook Bible, the Anne of Green Gables series, and The Borrowers Afield. Now you have me wanting to curl up with the series I'm currently loving, The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (set in Botswana!).

  3. When I was growing up my favorites were "A Wrinkle in Time" "A Wind in the Door" and "A Swiftly Tilting Planet" by Madeline L'Engle. I also loved "The Giver" "Gathering Blue" and "Messenger" by Lois Lowry. If Margaret gets interested in a series, "The Boxcar Children" was also a favorite! Oh how I love books!!!
